This was a fascinating concept introduced to me by a friend whos into radio controlled airplanes, and that I'm sure a few of you are familiar with. It allows a non-powered glider to achieve speeds of over 200 mph as seen in this impressive video. Notice the noise it makes as it rips through the air. You can go here for an explanation of it, and other related resources. And heres another site.

That's a really cool video, Robert. You often see birds flying back and forth along mountain ridges (you can fly a zig-zag pattern to get the same effect) in order to take advantage of wind shear in the same way. I haven't seen it demonstrated as well as in that video, though.

Thanks!

That was pretty cool

I'd like to try that someday I think. My mate down the road has model planes 'n' stuff. Might hassle him a bit

Slope soaring is a very enjoyable hobby - provided that you don't (as I do) live in the flatest of landscapes.

The principle of flying a downward glidepath in a rising area of air so the loss in altitude is regained is well established.
The full scale record for slope soaring is 36 hours 36 mins in the air - only limited to human endurance.

That is the art of soaring. Simply put but not so easily done.

Yep. the International Gliding Federation (FAI) removed the record category of time aloft about 60 years ago when too many people started killing themselves by having sleep induced halucinations and flying into mountains while trying to beat previous records.

My real gliding is somewhat limited - about 20 hours - Little time in the past few years although I have several excellent gliding clubs close by.

Many more hours with models, though again not in the last few years.
